What We’ve Learned as a Small Architectural Practice

Working as a small architectural practice, we often find ourselves competing with much larger companies. At first, it can feel like a disadvantage. Larger practices have bigger teams, more resources and established systems. But through our own experience, we have found that being small also gives us some important advantages.

1. We can react quickly

When a client needs a change or a project takes an unexpected direction, we can make decisions quickly. There are fewer management layers and less bureaucracy.

2. We can keep our costs competitive

With a smaller structure and lower overheads, we can focus our resources directly on the project and the client, rather than maintaining a large organisational structure.

3. We work closely with our clients

Our clients have direct access to the people designing and delivering their projects. This creates a more personal relationship and, importantly, faster communication.

4. We can adapt

Every project changes. Budgets, programmes, materials and client requirements can all move during the design process. Being small allows us to adapt our approach without having to change a large organisational structure.

5. AI is changing the picture even further

We are also finding that AI and digital tools can help small teams work more efficiently from research and documentation to communication and design development. For us, AI isn’t about replacing architects. It is about giving a small team more capacity and more time to focus on what really matters: design, problem-solving and our clients.

Looking ahead

We don’t believe that being a small architectural practice means we have to compete with large companies on their terms.

We are agile, we are cost-conscious, we communicate directly, we can adapt quickly and we can embrace new technology quickly. Perhaps the future isn’t simply about how big an architectural practice is, but about how effectively it can use the people and technology it has. Being small may not be our limitation.
